Why this program?

There is no one weight loss program that is right for everyone. Counting calories, exercising and watching food choices/portions is one method that could work for weight loss. The problem is: for a lot of people, that doesn't work. Time and again we hear testimonials of people who have "tried every diet known to man"; how they have counted calories, counted carbohydrates, counted fat and yet not been successful; how they worked out every day, tried to make good food choices and watch portions and still...nothing.

There seems to be a very popular notion in the media and even in popular culture that individuals who are overweight are that way simply because they "have no self control" and "lack discipline" when it comes to food and activity choices. What a misconception of the truth! Instead what may truly be "lacking" is the time, nutritional education, and conscious awareness needed to successfully manage weight over the long-run.

Reducing your intake to only 800-1000 calories per day (which is the amount this program is designed to provide) will allow an individual to lose weight, but for many counting calories (and/or carbohydrates, fat, etc) is simply not enough. Each of the meal replacements has been nutritionally-designed to provide your body with a balance of protein, "good" carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. If trying to follow an 800-1000 calorie meal plan on "outside" food choices only, it would be nearly impossible (if not completely impossible) to get the nutrition your body needs to lose weight safely. Aside from that, since each of the meal replacements are individually packaged there is built-in portion control without any potential of "user error" or "inaccurate measuring" of one's true intake.

Additionally, it takes time, effort and planning to eat healthy meals, read food labels, understand potential obstacles and ways to overcome those; it takes the knowledge to know what to look for when reading a food label, how to accurately judge portions and the nutritional impact of "all those little things" such as the bite of this or that eaten throughout the day; conscious awareness of our environment, what temptations may be lurking, what we struggle with personally and strategies for overcoming all of these issues and more.

While I can't tell you if the Medifast meal program is right for you (or anyone else), I can tell you it has worked for a lot of people. Why? It is calorie, carbohydrate and portion-controlled; it is structured; it has been medically designed to provide a combination of nutrients that allows for safe and effective weight loss; the meals are convenient to store, easy to make and delicious to eat.

For most individuals, the structured nature of the Medifast meal plan is one of the greatest benefits. Each day we are faced with literally thousands of choices regarding food: we see commercials on T.V., billboards on streets, fast food restaurants on our drive home, endless aisles stocked with products of all shapes and sizes and each time, we must decide whether to eat, not to eat, what to eat and how much--and it gets exhausting!

The program can be thought of as "vacation" from having to make all those food choices every day. In today's environment it's not easy to consistently choose items that are good to eat, healthy for the body and slimming for the waistline. With the Medifast meals you know no matter what you choose as your five you're getting at least 100% of the daily value for 24 vitamins and minerals; a specific amount of nutrients; and are being good to your body. The lean and green meal, the one meal of the day you are responsible for, is a learning opportunity to further understand portion sizes, healthy ways to prepare different items and your chance to get creative with some proteins and vegetables you may not have been familiar with previously, but with guidance as to appropriate portion sizes and choices (so you have some flexibility, but are not completely left on your own).

Another aspect of this concept that is often over-looked is that the structure of the Medifast meal plan helps individuals to break free from those habits that may have contributed to their original weight gain while helping to build new and more health-promoting routines. For a lot of individuals eating just once a day, often in the evening, was a common practice. Reading labels, measuring portions and eating small frequent meals came into play only when the 5 and 1 plan was initiated...and it makes a huge difference.

What else makes Medifast different?
